Purpose and objectives of OSCs
OSCs are established to:
i. Provide integrated support and assistance to women in distress (both in private and public spaces) and women in distress, under one roof.
ii. Facilitate immediate emergency and non-emergency access to a range of services including medical, legal, psychosocial and counselling support under one roof to address all forms of violence.
Nature of Assistance:
The services provided at OSCs include emergency rescue and response, medical assistance, police assistance, legal aid, psychosocial support and counselling, and short-term shelter.
OSCs may also be equipped to provide forward linkages to institutionalized/ empanelled psychosocial/ legal counsellors for assisting survivors facing mental harassment or any other form of distress. They should connect survivors to government schemes / initiatives (economic and social) on a need basis through the State/ District level hubs for their development and empowerment. OSCs will maintain a list of all statutory authorities under applicable legislations to facilitate referrals/connect survivors on a need basis. They will also act as a link for Shakti Sadans for providing legal aid and psychosocial counselling to residents of the homes through a common pool of professionals.
OSCs are also the focal point at the district level for coordination and convergence with other initiatives under the Nirbhaya Fund such as Women Helplines, Anti Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs), Women Help Desks (WHDs), Mahila Thana, Special Fast Track Courts (FTSCs), District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) etc.
Who can Avail for the services :
Women and girls affected by violence or abuse can access OSC services, including:
• Domestic violence
• Physical, sexual, emotional or psychological violence
• Sexual harassment or sexual assault
• Trafficking
• Acid attacks
• Honour-related violence
• Violence occurring at home, workplace, community or other public places
• Women/girls who need legal, medical, police, counselling or immediate support
How to get Sakhi OSC services :
1. Go directly to a Sakhi One Stop Centre in your district and explain your situation. You can seek help yourself; you can also be referred by police, a hospital, a legal service provider, or another organisation.
2. You can also call the 181 Women Helpline for assistance and information about available support services. The helpline can help connect women in distress with appropriate government services, including One Stop Centre support.
3. Ask for the specific support you need—for example, counselling, medical assistance, legal assistance, police assistance, or temporary shelter.
4. The OSC staff can coordinate the relevant services and make referrals where necessary.
5. In an emergency, you can also seek immediate police/medical help and ask to be connected with the OSC.
